Invoicing in the UAE when you are not registered for VAT

Many small businesses in the UAE are below the VAT registration threshold. They still need proper invoices, but those invoices are not tax invoices and must not add VAT.

When registration is required

A business must register for VAT once its taxable supplies and imports pass AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, or are expected to in the next 30 days. It may register voluntarily from AED 187,500.

Below the threshold and not registered, you do not charge VAT and you do not have a TRN to print.

What to put on the invoice

  • Your company name, address and phone number
  • The customer's name and address
  • An invoice number and the date
  • A description of each service or product, with quantity and price
  • The total in AED
  • Your payment terms and bank details

What to leave off

  • The words Tax Invoice
  • Any VAT line or VAT amount
  • A TRN you do not have

Say clearly that no VAT applies

Customers, especially companies, often ask whether a price includes VAT. A short line on the invoice answers it before they ask.

In Tichkuly CRM, an invoice or quotation made without VAT prints Tax Status: No Tax / VAT Not Applicable.

Keep an eye on the threshold

Add up your sales over the last 12 months from time to time. The Reports page in Tichkuly CRM shows your sales for the year, which makes the check quick.

Short answers

Can I charge VAT before I am registered?

No. Only a business registered with the Federal Tax Authority may charge VAT.

Do I still have to give invoices if I am not registered?

Giving a clear invoice is good practice and most business customers will ask for one. It is an ordinary invoice, not a tax invoice.

What happens when I register later?

Add your TRN in your company settings and tick VAT on new invoices. They are then headed Tax Invoice with 5% VAT shown.
